The trick is to duplicate the particular layer and place one in front and the other behind your subject.

At the front one select Particular->Visibility and set the "Far Vanish" and the "Far Start Fade" to a value that no more particles are seen behind your subject. Also set the "Near Vanish" and the "Near Start Fade" to 0.

For the lower layer set the "Near Vanish" and the "Near Start Fade" to the same value as the front layers "Far"-value. Set the "Far Vanish" and the "Far Start Fade" for this layer to a really big value like 10000.
